THE Lennox Bell Trophy is on the Angler's sideboard following their surprise 3-1 win over the Bowling Green in the final of the competition played on the centre pitch at Harper Green. Martin Butterworth, Phil Ryan and Billy Nicholson did the damage to the cup favourites while Danny Shaw got their solitary consolation.

This is the second cup final that the Bowlers have lost in this season and must have been a big disappointment to managers Phil Larkin and Eddie Chadwick.

Their season isn't all over just yet though as they still have an outside chance of pulling of a championship win in the Bolton Evening News Premier Division should results go their way this week.

Realistically Bolton Castle are still favourites for their second consecutive league title but who knows anything can happen and that's the beauty of football.

Only two league games were played as the season winds down. Both were in the First Division, the first going Radcliffe Boroughs way 4-0 away at Alboro the second seeing league champions Shakespeare overcome Doffcocker 1-0. BOLTON Sunday League's Presentation Night will be held on Friday June 2nd.

Ex-Bolton Wanderers, Manchester City and England star Freddie Hill will be present to award medals and trophies to the winning teams. Tickets for this popular event are now on sale priced £2.00 and can be obtained from League Secretary Alan Johnson by phoning him on 01204 532096. FOR most of the season Tonge United have been within touching distance of their first ever trophy.

Two cup semi-final defeats and a tail off in league form to finish third meant however that the silverware finally eluded them. Now though that has been put to rights as the Bolton Sunday League Committee have voted them the most sporting team in the league.

League secretary Alan Johnson said: "They're a great bunch of lads. Every week they have been down to my house giving me their score and scorers and waiting for other results to come in. Their enthusiasm has been terrific."

Vice-President Bob Shuttleworth said: "This trophy usually goes to the team that finishes bottom. Not this year though as we have had so many good reports about Tonge from referees and from their opponents we have decided to give it to them."

Tonge United's first ever trophy will now be awarded to them at the presentation evening on June 2. THE Annual Meeting of the Bolton Sunday League will take place on Monday July 10th at 8pm at Farnworth Cricket club.

Applications to join the Bolton Sunday League from all old and any new clubs must be returned to the General Secretary no later than June 1st.

Alan Johnson can be contacted on 01204 532096 or alternatively you can write to him at 7 Edditch Grove, Bolton BL2 6BJ. Clubs will not be considered after that June 1. For the second week running Bolton Sunday League Committeemen complained bitterly about the standard of the centre pitch at Harper Green. This is Bolton Metro's so-called show pitch and is the best on offer from the authority, being used exclusively for finals and prestige games. League officials were uncertain at the weekend as to whether it had been cut for the final. "If it had" they said "it must have been the previous Monday and allowed to grow across the week. On Sunday it was ankle deep again and not fit for a final."
