WITH reference to your recent article written by Steve Canavan, regarding a Harwood road junction. I would like to make the following points.

As I both live and work in Harwood, I read with interest your comments concerning the accident blackspot at the junction of Hardy Mill Road, Arthur Lane and Stich-Mi-Lane, and I feel that the problem is far more serious than was stated.

Traffic emerging from Arthur Lane onto Hardy Mill Road already exceeding the 30mph speed limit, actually accelerates down Hardy Mill Road as it is quite a steep hill. I would guess that many cars are soon in excess of 50mph in a 30mph zone.

I have two young sons that have to use this road, and I was disgusted to read that Bolton Council have decided that there have not been enough accidents to "justify any expenditure to make it safer", that's a laugh!

Anyone driving through Breightmet recently, could not help but notice the number of speed humps that have suddenly appeared, not just on through roads, but on many side roads, which are used mainly by residents. How can this "expenditure" be justified.

I seriously feel that if the council were to carry out a survey of the whole stretch of road, and not just the junction, then they would come up with the right statistics that they are all so keen on, and do something to make this road safer. Or must we wait for one more accident that we read about so frequently before anything is done?

It seems that this is the only statistic which will bring any action, I sincerely hope that when this happens, as it surely will, that there are no fatalities.
