A SCHOOL'S "Straight A's" performance has put it in a class of its own.

Ofsted inspectors said they were impressed by standards achieved at Lowercroft County Primary in Bury.

Heading the list of achievements were the National Curriculum test results achieved by 11-year-olds at the school last year. Not only did they get an A grade in English when compared to all other schools but did even better in mathematics and science with an A*.

Reporting inspector, Mrs Heather Evans, said: "The A* grade indicates standards that are very high. In the listed subjects the school achieved standards that are well above average and often very high in comparison with the national averages.

"When compared with similar schools the standards are good in English, well above the average in mathematics and very high in science.

"The school's results in the most recent tests are an improvement on those in 1998 and more pupils are achieving high levels of attainment. Standards in Information Technology overall are in line with national expectations with some aspects above the average."

Teaching standards were "good or better" in 73 per cent of lessons and "very good" in nearly a quarter. Other strengths of the school included provision for children under five in the reception classes which were seen to be "very good", and teaching and non-teaching staff working together very well as a team.

Relationships were good with pupils behaving well and having good attitudes to learning.

Ofsted inspectors found a "good atmosphere" for learning for all pupils.
