DURING the past two weeks there have been constant appeals to the public to use water sparingly. Bolton's water supply is drawn from 11 reservoirs, situated in and around the borough. It is the eighth largest undertaking in the country controlled by a municipality. The supply of water is still one of the cheapest public services in the country.

In 1847, the annual cost of water for a house with a gross value of £50 was £3; today, that cost is only £3 6s 3d a year, an increase of 6s 3d (31p) in 100 years. The average cost of water is about 2d (1p) per head a week.

A FIRE broke out in Chicago at four o'clock yesterday afternoon. It raged for about twelve hours and destroyed sixty acres of buildings. They were mostly tenements of the worst class. Several important edifices were, however, consumed. Among these were the Post Office, the Adelphi Theatre, the magnificent Baptist Church, the Methodist Church, St Mary's Catholic Church, two synagogues and four hotels. The value of the property destroyed is estimated at five million dollars, or one million sterling.
