POLICE and customs officials have launched an investigation after a Sunday newspaper claimed a woman PC from Bury was involved in a sales racket involving cut price booze and cigarettes.

The Sunday People claimed an undercover reporter had arranged to buy drink and tobacco from the WPC and her husband and had been told to collect it from a church-run building a few yards from Bury's police HQ.

And it was claimed the reporter was told to collect his order from the Manna House religious centre, close to the Irwell Street HQ, where a Christmas party was being held for officers' children.

A senior detective from a neighbouring division is now investigating the claim that the WPC was selling goods brought in from France.

The newspaper's file has been handed to Greater Manchester Police. A senior officer said: "The matter is under investigation and it would be inappropriate for us to make any comment at this time."
