SINCE taking office, the Government has repeatedly stated its commitment to the improvement of the nation's construction industry. 1998 could be said to have been the year of ideas, but, if we are to reap the benefits of this commitment, 1999 must be the year of action.
In his recent report, Rethinking Construction, Sir John Egan concluded that inefficient practices are costing the country millions of pounds every year. To help overcome this, the Government and the Industry have established many initiatives to provide advice and assistance to companies seeking to change. Despite this, many of the smaller organisations in the industry are still not aware of the range of resources and assistance available.
As Programme Director of the Construction Best Practice Programme, my Organisation has been created to act as the interface between those companies who are seeking to eliminate those inefficiencies and the initiatives created to assist them. Our Management Unit is staffed, not by academics, but by personnel carefully selected for their hands-on experience in the market place. Helping them identify those applicable to their situation.
