3 CASH prizes are available for North-west employers who take action to improve the health and well-being of their workforce. The North West Health Challenge Awards offer £20,000 cash prizes to organisations, including workplaces, whose policies or activities are helping staff to lead a healthier lifestyle at work and at home. The scheme, now in its sixth year, is organised by the NHS in the region "in recognition of the contribution made by employers to keeping people well."

Organiser Christine Hughes is calling on companies who offer health-related projects for staff to contact the Awards Office on 0151 227 1161.

She said: "We are keen to unearth and acknowledge employers who actively support their staff to better health.

"Projects and activities provided at work not only boost morale and reduce stress but can have a wider impact as employees take home the health message to their families and friends."

Projects need not be complex, but judges are keen to hear about initiatives which take a fresh approach and are easily adaptable by others.

Hyndburn Borough Council won £5,000 in 1998.

A dedicated co-ordinator stages a programme of health initiatives for 450 staff - many in work time.

The programme includes twice-yearly health checks, free on-site keep fit sessions and smoking cessation courses.

Other previous winners have included Liverpool Cycle Centre, Merseyside, which was awarded £1,000 for encouraging its 18 staff to cycle to work by providing free indoor parking space, massage and laundry facilities.
