ANGRY workers at Bolton's Hick Hargreaves' engineering works staged a sit-in today in protest over what they claimed was a 'blackmail threat' from management. Stewards manned the gates of the works in Crook Street from 6.45am, and all management and office staff were refused entry as they arrived. Now the 250 men are organising a duty rota, and say they intend to keep up a 24-hour watch until they are offered fair treatment. They decided on their sit-in after they received a statement from the management saying they would not be paid until a two-weeks-old work-to-rule had ended.

ON Saturday morning a somewhat serious explosion occurred on the new line from Bolton to Manchester, now being formed by Messrs Knight and Pilling, the contractors. A man named Thomas Hamel, a ganger, and Samuel Massey, a platelayer, were standing near a small engine when one of the pipes burst, and the door of the engine being forced open, Hamel was seriously scalded about the legs and arms, and Massey had his ankle crushed. The former was removed home in Ormrod-street, where he was attended by Mr Dorrian, surgeon, and the latter was taken to the Infirmary.
