POLICE are warning visitors to a local beauty spot to be on their guard to stop them becoming victims of thieves. Rivington is a very popular recreational area, with many visitors arriving by car to take walks and picnics. Sometimes vehicles are left unattended for several hours. Now police are so concerned by the number of cars being broken into, they have issued an urgent warning.

Sergeant Bill Cunliffe said: "Unfortunately, thieves seem to have realised there are rich pickings to be had with valuables being left in many vehicles.

"I would urge people to take steps to reduce the risk of becoming a victim.

"Simple crime prevention measures are often the most effective.

"For instance, it would be wise to leave valuables at home.

"But if you must leave them in the car, put them in the boot where they are out of sight."

Sergeant Cunliffe also suggested drivers fit visible steering wheel locks, or an engine immobiliser to the car to deter would-be thieves.

"Anyone who sees people acting suspiciously on or near car parks, are asked to report the incident to the police straight away."

He added. "There will be extra police patrols in the Rivington area to combat the problem and reassure visitors."
