A MAN and a woman were killed instantly in a horrific head-on smash involving a £40,000 sports car.

The almost new TVR, travelling on Bolton Road towards Bury, collided with a Renault 5 being driven in the opposite direction last night.

Retired teacher Joyce Crossley, 66, - a member of the Bolton group of Advanced Motorists - of Newington Drive, Bury, was found dead at the wheel of the Renault. A 31-year-old London man was dead in the passenger seat of the TVR.

The TVR driver, David Masterson, 35, of Turks Road, Radcliffe, escaped with minor injuries and was taken to Bury General Hospital, where he is recovering.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash which happened at 7.15pm near Beales Brick Yard.

Officers say the sports car had been overtaking a number of cars before the accident. The impact of the crash sent the Renault skidding on its side up against a lamppost, with the rear of the TVR pushed up against it.

Any witnesses are asked to phone Bury Traffic Unit on 0161 872 5050.

Mrs Crossley was a retired teacher who taught business studies in Manchester. She was also publicity officer for the Bolton and District Group of Advanced Motorists.

Today a spokesman for the group said: "I have known Joyce for quite a few years, since she joined our group. She was a very active member from the outset and a good friend."

Mrs Crossley was one of the group's observers and did not teach advanced motoring. A neighbour added: "She was a very friendly neighbour, always busy and had a full life. She played bridge a lot. We are all very shocked."

Mrs Crossley, who lived alone, leaves a son and a daughter.
