SIR: I write in response to two recent letters about the subject of Labour's election pledges.

It is true that those five pledges are the yardstick by which the electorate should judge the Government, and in my opinion the Government has made a brilliant start in delivering them.

But even in those areas where Labour didn't make specific pledges, look at the results: cut in corporation taxes for business, a child care tax credit, a huge hospital building programme, extra money for pensioners' winter bills, the list goes on, while the promise not to raise income tax has been honoured.

Perhaps most important of all, an historic breakthrough has been made in Northern Ireland. Would this have occurred but for the selfless efforts of Tony Blair and Mo Mowlam?
