A BLACKROD councillor claims motorists are breaking speed limits on the town's by-pass - because of a lack of signs.

Town councillor Pat Barrow says there are no 40mph signs for drivers approaching the by-pass from the Brinsop roundabout.

The limit was introduced this year in a bid to prevent accidents at the dangerous A6/Manchester Road junction.

Pat said: "There's nothing there for cars coming off the motorway to say you're coming into a 40mph zone.

"They assume they are in a derestricted area.

"But slowing down cars coming up the A6 was the reason the speed limit was introduced in the first place."

Pat and husband Ray say the only way to prevent smashes is to build a roundabout.

The couple say they have been campaigning for 18 years and add there are often up to three accidents a week at the junction.

Pat added: "With all the money they've spent on messing around with the junction, they could well have afforded a roundabout."

She said land next to the junction was owned by the council, making it easy to build one.

She added speed-detection cameras had not yet been installed even though there were camera warning signs.

A council spokesman said: "The A6 from Westhoughton approaching Blackrod was already a 40mph zone with signs from the roundabout.

"The new 40mph section at Blackrod is therefore a continuation of this.

"It is also proposed to put cameras there."
