JONNY Clay retained his yellow jersey on the final stage of the Travelwise Tour of Lancashire four-day cycle race to take the overall honours as he did in 1992.

Clay also led Team Brite to a clean sweep with Chris Newton second at 1min 4secs and Matt Illingworth third at 1-11.

The 34-year-old Leeds man covered 262 miles in 10hrs 29min 48sec, an average speed of 25mph.

Only two other men have won twice in the 15-year history of the race, the former World and Olympic Champion Chris Boardman and milk race winner Chris Lillywhite. All three are due to clash in the new national Prutour in three weeks.

Kevin Dawson re-established his lead In the Bolton Evening News-sponsored Hot Spot Sprints Competition, winning it with 16 points to Julian Winn's 13.

Like Jonny Clay, Kevin Dawson is also a specialist against the clock, Clay being the current 10 miles champion and Dawson the British best all-rounder.

Both Dawson and Winn had contributed much to the racing, Dawson finishing fourth after being the first overall leader by virtue of Hot Spot bonuses with Winn fifth and taking the King of the Mountains title.

When Jonny Clay had first taken the overall lead, he had identified yesterday's stage as his most vulnerable but his Brite boys controlled it well, bringing back a four-man breakaway group with 10 miles to go, and paving the way for a massed sprint for the line.

Gary Adamson, who delights in sprint finishes, made the most of the opportunity to score the first major win for the newly-formed Team Travelwise when he sprinted clear from a 57-strong bunch in Longridge.

Dave Williams from Southport had been a solo entry and even without team support finished tenth overall.

There were 61 finishers from 96 starters.?
