WHAT a pity that our reborn affection for steam railway engines is not echoed locally for those mighty machines that made our mills so famous.

The failure of the Northern Mill Engine Society to secure sufficient funding for their Steam Into Science museum venture is obviously a blow to hopes for another major tourist attraction in Bolton. Fully restored and in top working order, those power sources that helped to make Britain great are awe-inspiring sights. So let's hope it's not the end of this particular piece of our proud textile history.
