AN historic bowling club has been kicked out of its 110-year-old home without consultation by pub bosses, according to members.

The Ridgway Arms Private Bowling Club has been based on the green at the rear of the Blackrod pub since 1887.

But now club secretary Norman Winrow fears no more games will be played there.

The new season is due to start at Easter.

He said: "We've been told now that they want to get rid of the green and put picnic tables and a bouncy castle on there.

"It's not just the home for us, but three other bowling clubs use it as well.

"It's part of the history of the area, having been used for more than a century. We want to play our 111th season there."

Mr Winrow believes the decision has been made at regional level by Greenalls.

Licensee of the Station Road pub Phil Swarsbrick refused to comment and referred enquiries to Greenalls head office. A Greenalls spokesman said a play area was being considered to add to the family appeal of the pub which has undergone a refurbishment incorporating a new restaurant.

He added: "Regrettably the company is unable to give commitment to the bowling club for another season of bowling at this stage while the proposal is being considered.

"It is felt that this proposal, if it goes ahead, would benefit the majority of customers and the local community."
