A GRIEVING mother has called for a change in the law after the owner of the nursery where her 20-month-old son drowned was fined £4,000 for breaching safety and childcare regulations.
Catriona Rae, of Oakmere Avenue, Withnell Fold, made her plea after Blackburn magistrates were told how her son Alex was found face down in rainwater at the Hilltop Bunnies Nursery, Belmont, in July last year.
An inquest recently recorded his death as an accident.
Carolyn Brown, 23, of Hill Top Farm, Longworth Road, Belmont, admitted breaching safety regulations, looking after too many children and failing to have enough qualified staff. She was fined £4,000 and also ordered to pay £2,419 costs.
Mrs Rae has called on the government to tighten laws: "To say that my child's life is worth £4,000 is an absolute disgrace," she said.
Chorley's MP Lindsay Hoyle has backed the call and promised to look into the matter.
