THE final go ahead has been given for ambitious schemes to transform two of Bolton town centre's worst eyesores.
Planning councillors have given permission for a highly impressive project at the former fire station Marsden House in Marsden Road.
It will create 87 flats, a social centre for the trade union Unison, a health club and a huge indoor climbing wall. And councillors have also approved detailed plans to convert three derelict buildings on historic Churchgate into a pub and restaurant.
Work is already underway on demolishing the Churchgate buildings.
Cllr Bob Howarth, Bolton Council leader, praised the scheme at Marsden Road at a meeting of the planning control sub committee.
He said: "This, I hope, is the beginning of the end of a saga which began 10 or 12 years ago.
"There have been various schemes over the years which for one reason or another have fallen through.
"This corner has been an eyesore for years and it will be a considerable improvement to the approach to town."
Deputy leader, Cllr Guy Harkin, added: "It is a splendid development.
"This is an extremely attractive building and I am very glad that permission was not given over the years to demolish it."
