BUSINESSES who have sponsored the arts in the North-west receive recognition tomorrow.

Mr Mark Fisher, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, will be at Manchester Airport to present 47 awards.

The companies involved include United Utilities, who sponsor the Halle Orchestra, Manchester Camerata, the National Trust North-west region and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society.

The awards have been made under the Government's National Heritage Arts Sponsorship Scheme.

This pairing scheme is designed to increase the level of business sponsorship of the arts in Great Britain by offering cash awards to arts organisations which have received new or increased sponsorship from business.

It is administered by the Association for Business Sponsorship of the Arts.

Christopher Pulleine, Director of ABSA North, said: "During the last year, 1996-97, the Pairing Scheme has seen remarkable growth in the North-west.

"New business sponsorship amounting to £487,249 has been matched under the scheme - an increase of 54 per cent over the preceding year."
