LEIGH RMI survived a double icy blast to keep one hand on the President's Cup after the goalless quarter-final tie at Guisley last night.

They overcame the wintery conditions in a game in which they failed to reach the standards they have set this season.

But then they were faced with an angry manager who labelled it one of the worst performances of the season and warned that only two players were guaranteed a starting place against Bishop Auckland on Saturday.

Steve Waywell said: "Dave Felgate and Peter Smyth are the only two players who came out of this game with any credit, the rest will have to take a long long look at themselves.

"We were going to have Thursday off, but after this it is training as usual. We showed a lack of effort and were abysmal in a game we should have comfortably won.

"But for our goalkeeper we would have been dead and buried by half time."

Felgate produced an outstanding save on the half hour when he denied Peter Atkinson from the penalty spot after Terry Williams had handled in the box.

And then four minutes before the break his save from Simon Parke's header was even better. Lee Elan crossed from the right, Parke outjumped the Leigh defence and directed his header into the top corner, but Felgate flung himself to his right and clawed the ball away.

He was beaten midway through the second half when Mike Morrell turned in Elan's cross but the ball struck the foot of the post and bounced back into a relieved Felgate's arms.

The replay will take place next Tuesday at Hilton Park forcing the cancellation of the league game with Colwyn Bay and causing further problems in an already congested fixture backlog.
