A MYSTERY have-a-go hero chased off a masked robber who held up a Leigh post office yesterday.

The robber burst into Westleigh Lane post office at lunchtime yesterday.

Wearing a full-face balaclava mask and giving the impression he had a gun, he demanded cash from the terrified postmistress.

But the thug did not reckon on the actions of a brave male customer.

He confronted the raider and frightened him so much that he abandoned the hold-up and fled empty handed.

Even then the angry customer was determined that the criminal should not get away and gave chase.

The robber, a white man, was spotted abandoning the balaclava, a green jacket and white Nike USA track suit bottoms he was wearing in nearby Telford Crescent and making a get away on a blue push bike towards Wigan Road. Unfortunately, not only has the robber disappeared, but the post office hero has too and detectives would like to speak to him.

Det Insp Ian Foster praised the hero's actions. "He tried his best but we don't know as yet who he is," said DI Foster.
