VEHICLE coupling manufacturer VBG Ltd is relocating from Runcorn to a £3.2 million purpose-built plant at Lowton, near Leigh. Sales, engineering and administrative personnel moved in this week. Production will be transferred in phases over the next three weeks.

The first phase facility, which is five minutes from junction 23 on the M6, has been developed in consultation with production specialists from the University of Stockholm and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology.

The intention is to gain the internationally-recognised environmental management standard ISO14000.

A water-based paint plant is installed and all fabrication work will be carried out in a sound-proof area with a special air filtration system.

The site is being landscaped and a tree planting scheme is planned in conjuction with a neighbouring primary school.

Developers Suma North West and contractors Snape Ltd started work on site last July.

The project has also involved Business Link Wigan, Wigan MBC and Coalboard Challenge.
