locked loos WHILE we understand why local people want the toilet block at the junction of Blackburn Road and Crompton Way demolished, we question whether this would be of benefit in the long term.

The toilets have been closed for months after complaints about homosexuals using it as a meeting place.

Now Eugene Ryan, landlord of the nearby Pineapple pub, says they are serving no purpose and should be demolished.

The more positive approach would be to reopen the toilets and ensure that they are properly run.

The shortage of public loos in and around Bolton is a cause for great concern. If complaints are made that homosexuals, or anyone else for that matter, are causing a nuisance at toilets a police presence is called for immediately and action should be taken. Demolishing the loos seems a drastic and defeatist measure.

Jeff Layer, Bolton Council's head of environmental management, sensibly wants to know what local opinion is on this issue. We urge people tell him.
