DISABLED people can go for a day out to Blackpool . . . but they can't get back again! The railway station at Blackrod has access for the disabled on the Blackpool-bound line. But passengers cannot get off on the way back - instead they have to travel to Bolton and make their own way to Blackrod.

Now Blackrod Cllr John Monaghan is campaigning for both sides to be suitable for the disabled.

He said at a Bolton Council meeting: "People should not have to go all the way into Bolton. They should be able to get off at Blackrod."

But Cllr Jack Foster, planning and environment committee chairman, said the council had been told by the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive that it would be difficult to make the platform fully accessible for the disabled.

This was because of the steepness of the land around the station.

But he said that the new station at the nearby Middlebrook development would be purpose-built for the disabled.
