A MAN was fighting for his life in a hospital's intensive care unit today after an horrific accident in Bolton town centre.

Pedestrian Paul Wilson, aged 26, was catapulted into the windscreen of the single decker bus as he was crossing Great Moor Street. He suffered appalling head injuries.

Ambulance paramedics treated Mr Wilson of Seymour Road, Astley Bridge, at the scene before he was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital. He was still seriously ill in the hospital's intensive care unit today.

The accident was one of two involving buses on Bolton's roads yesterday.

Mr Wilson was injured as he was crossing Great Moor Street, near the junction with Newport Street, at 1.15pm. The road was closed for up to two hours as police officers from the Accident and Investigation Department inspected the scene.

The 32-year-old driver of the Volvo single decker bus was not injured.

In a separate accident last night a car driver had to be cut free from the wreckage of his car after a head-on accident with a bus in Chorley Old Road, Doffcocker.
