SHOPPERS in Bolton's Victoria Square joined in the fun as the crew from HMS Beaver, Bolton's adopted Royal Navy ship, took part in a tug-o-war with local firecrews.

To deafening cheers, firefighters from Bolton Central and North stations took on the lads from the anti-submarine frigate which docked in Liverpool last week.

And to the astonishment of the firefighters, the Beaver boys came out on top - the first time this has happened since the event was started years ago in the days of Beaver's predecessor HMS Dido.

But the fun was not all male dominated. Later a team of Wrens battled it out with female staff from the council's leisure services.

The tug-o-war was just one of several sporting events which the sailors took part in during their stay.

Later in the day, they enjoyed a rugby game against Bolton Rugby Union club.

Civic events included a reception in the Festival Hall where HMS Beaver's captain called on Bolton Mayor, Cllr Peter Birch.

Later the crew gathered on the town hall steps for an inspection.
