Today, we look at the importance of Smoke Alarms and how to look after them so that they can give that vital early warning of fire. 1. How often should a Smoke Alarms be tested.

Monthly.

2. How should a Smoke Alarm be tested?

By pressing the test button. Use your thumb and give a "thumbs up" to Fire Safety.

If you cannot reach, a broom handle or similar stick can be used.

3. What warning sound would you get to indicate that your Smoke Alarm battery needs changing?

It beeps once a minute.

4. How often should Smoke Alarm batteries be changed?

Every 12 months. Only use new batteries.

Don't be tempted to put a used battery in.

5. Approximately how long will the battery last once it starts beeping? Two weeks, giving you a warning even when you have been away from your house.

6. Will your Smoke Alarm work when the battery is beeping?

Yes, for about two weeks, the battery will still operate your Smoke Alarm as normal.

7. When should you take out the battery, once it starts beeping?

Only remove the battery when you have a replacement available.

8. Can your Smoke Alarm be affected by things other than smoke?

Steam, hairsprays, spray-on deodorants and body sprays all have fine particles which can activate your Smoke Alarm.

Take care when using them near a Smoke Alarm.

9. Is there anything else that you should do to maintain your Smoke Alarm?

A build up of dust and cobwebs will slow the smoke entering your Alarm and delay the actuation.

You should Hoover or dust the Alarm regularly.

10. Are there any other Dos and Don'ts for Smoke Alarm maintenance?

Yes.

Don't borrow batteries from Smoke Alarms for other items.

Don't paint over test buttons and covers - you will restrict the areas for smoke to enter the Alarm.
