SIR: Further to the letter from John Rothwell (Don't transfer the problem, BEN, July 9), may I state: "Yes John, I have been across the moss, and viewed together with legally elected representatives for those areas on the route proposed".

You also state that co-operation would be required with Salford officials. I think this will be easier said than achieved.

Relative to the blank sheet of paper mentioned in the article, could I add that the proposals for the Southern Street route were a blank piece of paper to me until Mr Rothwell mentioned them. I also feel that the author knows a little more than he is saying, in quoting 15 acres of open space being lost to the public.

What is the use of transferring or attempting to transfer something which one does not want (ie traffic) to another similar area (Worsley Road) which also does not want the traffic.

The only sensible solution would be (and has been approached on several occasions in the past) to plumb into the M61 and ancillary roads at the rear of the Lyons Estate.

Department of Transport Ministers and officials have in the past repeatedly refused after inspection of the area, to sanction the much needed alterations. Of course, if this were achieved, we would still have a traffic problem on Bolton and Manchester Road in Kearsely with existing day to day traffic.

Also has any thought been given to motorists who may (if the Southern Street proposals come to pass) use Springfield and Pilkington Roads as a rat run to Walkden/Little Hulton etc.

With all the to-ing and fro-ing of the situation, I view with some concern the gradual fading from view of the monies allocated for this service road, with the consequence that, monies are then passed to some other authority, or as has happened in the past been moved to another part of the borough, never to reappear again south of Moses Gate.
