PUPILS at a Bolton primary school could face another term on a 'building site', following the collapse of a firm carrying out a £1million revamp programme.

St Gregory's Primary School in Farnworth was left surrounded by concrete and scaffolding when the Leeds based company T.C.T. Construction went into liquidation on June 25.

But it will be another month before the 245-pupil school on Presto Street finds out who will continue the work.

Headteacher Mr Gerard Maloney said: "I'm hoping that in the next three or four weeks we'll know something more definite.

"Someone has taken responsibility for securing the fencing around the site so the children are in no danger, but everything else is just as it has been from the start. It's been very disruptive because we are not certain exactly when work will start again."

Despite the building chaos, Mr Maloney says the children have managed to keep their spirits up. "The children have been very good," he said. "Especially as half their playground has gone, they have coped quite well."

The school's structural problems stretch back over many years.

On April 29, builders moved on to the site and demolished the offices, laying foundations to replace the junior block and refurbish the infants' section. But on June 26, when no one turned up for work, staff were informed that the firm had gone into liquidation.

Mr Maloney said: "I'll be coming in through the summer holidays, but in three to four weeks we should know who will be taking over the operation.

"We've got the OFSTED inspectors coming in November, so hopefully we'll get sorted out before then."
