SIR: I refer to the letter headed: ? Cyclists ought to pay too (BEN July 9).
Reinforcing your columnist Doreen Crowther's response to the assertions made by E Sellers on cyclists' responsibilities, I point out that virtually all the 190 adult members of Bolton's largest cycling club (the Lancashire Road Club) are also motorists and pay road tax.
Our club urges all cyclists to join one of the national bodies (Cyclists Touring Club or British Cycling Federation) where third party insurance is a part of the membership package.
We have no objection in principle to an equitable road tax for cyclists, but previous governments have concluded that the cost of collection would exceed the income generated.
Finally, your correspondent appears to resent the cost of the gradually increasing provision for cyclists in the Bolton area. These costs are more than offset from the savings in human and financial terms by the protection they offer to such vulnerable road users.
