STAFF at Parklands High are celebrating after an inspectors' report praised the school for its "potential to achieve excellence".

An OFSTED team found teachers' standards at the Southport Road school were "good value for money" and hailed GCSE results as "well above average".

Acting head Robert Aitchison was personally congratulated for guiding staff through a tough time following the sudden death of former headteacher Gordon Wright.

And teachers were given a pat on the back: "Staff have a thorough knowledge of their subjects and firm class control. Lessons are well planned and move at a brisk pace."

Recommendations to governors included improving the library, extending design and technology and RE lessons and introducing daily assemblies.
