THE angry grandparents of murdered toddler Demi-Leigh Bolton today spoke of their heartbreak at losing their "treasured" granddaughter.

John and Yvonne Bolton said the family would only have been satisfied if Sysa Oudomvilay had faced the death penalty.

Mr Bolton, speaking after the case from his home in Shepley Avenue, Daubhill, said: "What does life mean these days? He could be out after a few years.

"That's no justice and we're not satisfied. We've lost our treasured granddaughter and he is still alive."

The couple say they and Demi-Leigh's mum Bernadette would never get over the little girl's brutal murder.

Mrs Bolton said although they never suspected little Demi-Leigh to be in danger from her father, they did discover that Oudomvilay had beaten Bernadette.

She said: "He was a very quiet man, perhaps too quiet.

"I think when Demi-Leigh came along, he was jealous of the attention Bernadette gave her.

"He would stay in the bedroom and not come out.

"But there again he would do anything for his daughter. He would make her things and any money he had he would spend it on her."

Initially the family stuck by Oudomvilay but later discovered the truth after Mr Bolton visited him in Strangeways.

He said: "The day it happened was his birthday.

"It wasn't a slap in temper, he must have been in a blind rage to have inflicted such injuries."
