A SCOUT who died of muscular dystrophy just weeks before he was due to receive an environmental award has been described as "an inspiration to others."

Adam Hargreaves, who had taken part in a scouting first for Birtenshaw Hall 2nd Bolton Scout Troop, was 16 years old when he died.

The local youngster was close to finishing the Senior Environment Challenge Badge when he died from the crippling disease.

The troop members, who received their awards from Councillor Jack Foster, are the first in Bolton to complete the environment-friendly project.

Cllr Foster, chairman of Bolton's planning and environment committee, paid special tribute to Adam for his "determination and courage."

During a special assembly at Birtenshaw Hall School, Cllr Foster said: "The example shown by this young man's commitment is tremendous and will, hopefully, inspire others.

"Adam was obviously very concerned about the environment and he had completed some excellent work for his certificate.

"Generally, the response has shown that young people care about the environment and are keen to become involved."

He continued: "Schemes like this are invaluable in raising awareness of important issues and providing young people with real opportunities to take positive action."

The challenge was launched in November last year and the Birtenshaw Hall troop looked at litter, recycling and wildlife concerns.
