Smithills School will give two contrasting concerts, conducted by Chris Wormald, within five days of each other next month.

The first is the Smithills School Summer Concert at the school, on Wednesday, July 2, at 7.30 pm.

This will be the usual popular mix of all the bands, choirs and soloists performing a wide range of popular music.

The second is the World Championship Send-off Concert at the Victoria Hall, Bolton, on Monday, July 7, at 7.30 pm staged by Smithills School and North Bolton Sixth Form College music departments.

Proceeds will go towards the Senior Brass Band appearance in the 1997 World Music Contest. The band will play at the Royal Festival Hall in London on July 10 ?and 11 before going to Holland for the World Championships in Kerkrade on July 12.

The concert on July 7 will feature the school's Senior Big Band, Senior Concert Band, Junior Choir, the Senior/Staff Choir and soloists.

Members of the public are invited to join the national champion school brass band and pianist Jacqueline Davies in the massed finale of Les Miserables on stage.

Organisers will welcome men and women who may already be in local societies or choirs and individuals who would enjoy the chance to sing with the band.

There will be two evening rehearsals in Smithills School music department on June 20 and July 4, from 8 pm to 9.30 pm. There is a nominal fee of £2 for anyone taking part. The ability to read music is not a requirement.

Tickets for both concerts are available at Smithills School reception.
