FLOODWATERS will engulf a new stretch of parkland in Great Lever. But Bolton Corporation experts are not worried - they have planned it that way. A 'flood plain' will deliberately be created at a cost of £115,000 by filling in old Pike Mill lodge and by culverting Tanner Hole Brook. The reclaimed land will be landscaped and given trees, walkways and seats, and serve as an attractive open space. But just occasionally it will disappear under storm waters.

WHERE and when a new car driver should carry 'L' plates is puzzling not a few would-be motorists at the moment, especially those who took out for the first time the 12 months' provisional licences between February 18th, 1947.

The RAC are telling their members that so long as this licence remains current, 'L' plates and an experienced driver-passenger are not required, but a driving test is still necessary to qualify for a full licence.

Applicants who have not had a test by the time the provisional licence expires, may obtain an extension for three months, and they will then be required to carry 'L' plates and be accompanied by an experienced driver until they pass the tests.

A CIRCULAR has just been issued from the Barracks of the Bolton Rifle Volunteers, appealing to the public for assistance to enable the regiment to relief itself from the position of affairs stated in the circular itself:-

At the present time, when it is perhaps desirable to maintain the efficiency of the volunteer force, the volunteers of Bolton find themselves prevented, from want of funds, from taking steps necessary to enable them to continue to hold the place they have hitherto done in the county. At the present time, money is imperatively needed. Next season the whole of the uniform of the men must be renewed, and this, with other necessary outlay, will cost over £2,000. Then again, the rifle range is in such a state of decay, and will cost at least £300 to restore. The officers of the corps request your consideration of this appeal; trusting you will afford them such assistance as in in your power, to enable them to place the corps in a really effective and satisfactory condition.
