HOUSING chiefs are looking at 21st century methods of heating Bolton's homes . . . including solar energy.
The council has commissioned a report to see how it can draw up an energy efficiency strategy.
And despite Bolton's dismal climate, one of the ideas which has come forward is capturing the sun's natural energy.
Mr Nick Moule, housing research and development manager, explained that this is not as daft as it sounds. "This is very much a serious suggestion. There are already people in Bolton who have solar heating panels.
"It would probably be necessary to have another heating system as a back up, but it is certainly something we will be investigat-
ing."
Another idea being looked at is using excess hot water from the Raikes Lane incinerator to heat homes. Greater Manchester Waste is planning to generate electricity by burning rubbish.
Housing chiefs are now also targeting the private sector with energy-saving measures.
Mr Moule explained: "Only a quarter of Bolton's homes are in the public sector. If we are to get the energy-saving message across, then we have to convince house owners."
