A FORMER Horwich woman and her husband have taken the plunge with a new business venture.

Carol and David Hack are running the Capernwray Diving and Leisure Centre after buying the 22-acre Overhead Quarry site between the villages of Capernwray and Over Kellet, near Carnforth, Lancashire.

The site is open for sub-aqua divers every day of the week throughout the year.

Carol Henley, as she was before her marriage, lived in an un-named track just off Chorley New Road and studied textiles at Manchester Polytechnic before obtaining a commission in the RAF, where she met husband-to-be Squadron Leaver David Hack.

After their RAF service they decided to risk everything they had in a venture close to their hearts.

They are both keen divers and skiers.

The water in the quarry is 80-feet deep and divers can explore the wrecks of a minesweeper (HMS Podsnap), two sailing vessels, an old Windermere ferryboat and an ex-naval helicopter.

There is also a man-made underwater cave and pike, trout and roach. The site shop sells diving gear, accessories, books, magazines, snacks and air which is pumped into divers' containers by means of a compressor.

Mrs Hack said the diving side was "quite sensational" with crystal clear water.

Development plans include a cafeteria, a new shop and a lecture theatre in keeping with the area.

The Hacks are living in temporary accommodation near the site until their house is built.
