OPPOSITION to a controversial sports complex plan in Ainsworth village is growing.

Letters of objection from around 500 people have been received by Bury Council.

Developers want to build football and cricket pitches plus a car park, tennis courts and a pavilion on a 12 acre site off Church Street.

The complex would be a new home for Bolton Road Sports Club in Bury and their existing sports ground off Bolton Road, Bury, would be sold by owners, Bolton Road Methodist Church, for housing.

But Ainsworth villagers are outraged by the proposed scheme, which is currently awaiting a planning decision by councillors, and say it would ruin the landscape and damage the environment.

Recently, amended plans were submitted to the council, increasing the proposed car park size to 40 spaces and re-siting the pavilion to back on to Church Street.

Ainsworth Community Association, which is co-ordinating protests against the plan, says nearly 500 letters of objection have been sent to Bury planning officials from villagers and people who live wider afield.

Posters have sprung up around the village against the scheme and association members have given out leaflets to worshippers attending Bolton Road Methodist Church.
