SIR: Tom Sackville should never be forgiven for denying our pensioners the right to stay warm in winter. He says he did not intentionally ensure that Audrey Wise's Bill ran out of time - what garbage! These are just weasel words from a man who filibustered by speaking for 44 minutes on a separate Bill, despite the fact that it already had all-party support.

This meant that Audrey Wise's Bill ran out of time and became as dead as the 350 pensioners killed each year because of the cold. All Mrs Wise's Bill would have done is take the wind chill factor into account when calculating which areas qualify for cold weather payments - but then again, why should Mr Sackville care? I bet his home is warm and cosy, even during the most severe winter months.
