WHEN Jackie Green found she was pregnant again, she was determined not to be hit by high blood pressure which put her in hospital while carrying her first daughter.

She knew exercise would help - but was not sure where to turn.

So she visited Sharples Leisure Centre - and signed up for aqua aerobics for pregnant women and new mums.

"I'd never done anything like aerobics, just a bit of swimming," said Jackie, 32, and five months pregnant.

"But I really enjoy the aqua aerobics. I've done a few sessions now and I'm already feeling the benefits.

"I used to get a bit breathless but that has eased off and I'm determined to get as fit as possible so I don't have to worry about high blood pressure.

"It's also a great way to meet other mums-to-be and gives you chance to talk about your pregnancy and share your experiences with them."

The aqua aerobics classes are being run by Sue Baines and Janice Owen - Bolton City Challenge Community Midwives - who have been specially trained to lead the classes.

"Research has shown that exercising in water may help to increase the birth weight of babies, which is one of our main objectives for babies in Halliwell," said Sue.

The classes, costing £1.70, are held at Sharples Leisure Centre swimming pool every Wednesday between noon and 12.30pm. Places are limited to 20 per class. To book, contact Sue or Janice on 01204-385662.
