NEGOTIATIONS are taking place to open a day care service for the elderly in Horwich.

Cllr Cliff Morris, chairman of social services, said day care could be provided in the Horwich Resource Centre.

At a full meeting of Bolton Council, Cllr Morris also pledged an expansion of home care services to include weekends - with plans to extend to an evening and overnight service.

A hot meals delivery service and snack meal service will start this month. Cllr Morris revealed the plans after Liberal Democrat Cllr Bob Ronson asked what was being done for the elderly in Horwich to compensate for the closure of the Stocks Park old people's home.

After the meeting, Labour's prospective parliamentary candidate for Bolton West, Ruth Kelly, said: "I am pleased Bolton Council has made this decision and shown they are determined to maintain care for the elderly."
