A BOY aged 12 was driving a stolen car which burst into flames after it ploughed into a pub during a police chase today.

The boy had a miraculous escape but his passenger - an eight-year-old boy - is fighting for his life in hospital.

The incident happened at 3.40am when two police officers in a Ford Transit van spotted a stolen Vauxhall Cavalier on Churchill Way, Salford.

The car was then driven at speed on the wrong side of the road. But the driver lost control on a bend and the vehicle ploughed into the Golden Gate pub and exploded in flames.

The two officers dragged the children from the car.

The eight-year-old is in the intensive care unit at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital with severe internal and back injuries. The driver is in Hope Hospital with minor cuts.
