By GORDON SHARROCK SCOTT Sellars stepped up his bid for a role in Wanderers' big screen test today.

The Burnden midfield ace, who missed the 3-1 victory over Norwich, resumed training in an effort to force his way back for Sunday's Sky TV special at QPR.

Sellars' thigh injury, which has been a handicap in the early stages of the season, has responded to treatment.

Now he is hoping to prove his fitness in time to figure at Loftus Road, where he opened his scoring account for Wanderers in last season's 2-1 Premiership defeat.

While he waits for reports on Sellars and Gerry Taggart, whose hamstring injury is improving daily, Colin Todd has effectively ruled out Scott Green, who needs more time to recover from the groin injury that forced him to limp out of the Norwich game.

With skipper Gudni Bergsson back in training but still short of match fitness, Steve McAnespie is on standby for his first senior start of the season.

Though not expected to figure at QPR, Bergsson can look forward to a game next Wednesday. He will play for Iceland in a friendly international against the Czech Republic in Prague which looks to be perfectly timed to put him in the frame for a Division One return at Southend three days later.

Meanwhile Wanderers winger Stuart Whittaker left for a month's loan at Wigan today with an assurance that he is still part of the Burnden squad.

The Liverpool-born wide man has had limited first team opportunities but Colin Todd has told Wigan not to play him in Coca-Cola Cup ties.

"Stuart's still a member of the squad here and we don't want him cup-tied," the Burnden boss explained. "The loan will give him valuable first team experience and we'll monitor him closely while he's there."
