GRIM and gloomy weather made it one of the quietest Bank Holiday week-ends on record. In many areas the roads were less busy than during a normal week-end. Many Bolton stayed at home because the holiday fell so close to the Bolton September holidays, which begin next week. 50 YEARS AGO

THE need for recruits to the nursing profession is an old story. It has been told in Bolton on many an occasion in the past year or two. But is the seriousness of the situation appreciated? Is it realized, for example, that midwifery nurses are so hard to come by that maternity equipment is standing idle because of shortage of staff?

One obvious remedy is a larger intake of student nurses, and to that end appeals are constantly being made. But there are also women who have been trained, but are now married. Could they not help sometime during the week?

Trained or untrained, full-time or part-time, paid or voluntary - any form of assistance will be only too gratefully accepted. 125 YEARS AGO

THE New York papers publish the following story from Chicago: - The Rev Eikan Herzman, pastor of the Fifth Avenue Synagogue, failing to comply with the regulations requiring all Israelites to fast strictly one day during the fast week, he having broken fast be eating ice-cream, the congregation are determined to remove him. This morning another rabbi occupied his desk, and an affray ensued, during which one of the leading officers of the church seized Herzman, divested him of his sacerdotal robes, conducted him to the door, with instructions to leave, threatening to kick him out if he returned, Herzman complained at police headquarters, but was informed they could do nothing. He threatened to prosecute for one year's salary and assault.
