A PASSER-by walking a dog saved a Bolton school after arsonists set fire to a classroom.

£10,000 worth of damage was caused just four days before Smithills School was due to reopen. Headmaster, Mr Mike Keogh, said he was "absolutely sickened".

"This has been a deliberate act of vandalism. It is a massive setback to us, particularly as we have been having so much work done throughout the holidays.

"This will mean that we will have a classroom out of action for at least two weeks. We will cope because we have to, but it is going to be difficult because this year will be our largest intake of first year pupils.

"The damage caused is estimated at £10,000, but you cannot put a price on all the books and test papers destroyed.

"I am just very grateful to the man who spotted the fire as well as the firemen for their actions."

Senior caretaker Peter Parr took charge of the clean up operation today. He said: "I am devastated this has happened."

Bolton station officer, Jim Marsden, said: "It could have been much, much worse had the passer-by not spotted the fire."

The incident coincided with a warning sent out to all local schools by Sub-Officer Shaun Higson. He said: "It is worth reminding all schools and colleges to be extra vigilant. In the final few days of the school holidays there are traditionally more incidents of buildings being set on fire."
