CAMERAS aimed at catching motorists breaking the law have fallen foul of another form of criminal - the vandals!

A speed camera on Bengal Street, Chorley, has been twisted round so that it is no longer focusing on the road to catch motorists but instead on a brick wall in the hope of catching a speeding insect or two.

Staff at the Autofit Garage arrived for work and found that the camera outside their premises had been twisted around and had a tow-rope hanging off it.

A spokesman for Chorley Police said that they were aware of what happened and that Lancashire County Council would be fixing it in the near future.

"It doesn't matter why they did it because we will fix it. Since we have put these speed cameras up we have had two damaged. It appears somebody tied a vehicle to the Bengal Street camera and tried to tow it away."

The incident has been regarded as quite amusing by people in the town centre, who have put forward suggestions as to why it happened. One person thought it may have been a revenge attack after being caught speeding while another thought it may have been the product of a drunken joke.

"Either way, it doesn't matter," said the spokesman for the police. "It will be fixed and we will continue to catch people speeding."
