LORA Fairclough and Joanne Morley face a battle for the last automatic Solheim Cup place in the £100,000 Compaq Open which started in Sweden today.

European captain Mickey Walker will name her side to face the United States at St Pierre from September 20-22 following Sunday's final round at Orebro. Fairclough currently holds the last automatic spot, but former Curtis Cup player Morley closed on the Lancashire golfer when she claimed a share of second place in the Trygg Hansa Open at Haninge, near Stockholm, last weekend.

If Fairclough finishes outside the top 20 and fails to earn any points this week, Morley could overtake her by finishing in the leading 16.

Marie-Laure de Lorenzi, Laura Davies, Alison Nicholas, Lisa Hackney and Annika Sorenstam have already earned automatic places in the team.
