AT least 30 bodies were recovered from the sea today after an explosion and fire wrecked a Greek holiday ship with 1,000 people on board. Many more passengers on the ship, the 11,000-ton car ferry Heleanna, were believed dead or injured. The disaster happened when the vessel, which has 12 British tourists on board, four of them from Fleetwood, was off Italy's Adriatic coast. 50 YEARS AGO

TRADE disputes have been rather abundant of late. Scarcely have we made ourselves acquainted with the peculiarities of one, than we have been startled by the announcement of another. The cloth-dressers of Huddersfield are now engaged in an effort to obtain an advance of wages under rather unusual circumstances. It is stated, and apparently not disputed, that no advance in wages has been made in this branch of industry for the last twenty years, and at a meeting of the men recently it was resolved to ask at once for a rise equal to 25 per cent on the present rate of wages. A consultation was afterwards held with a deputation representing the masters, and it was stated than an advance of 20 per cent would probably be agreed to without dispute. A memorial to this effect is now being circulated amongst the masters for signature, and it is generally expected that an arrangement on this basis will speedily be effected.
