SIR: Following recent TV programmes, eg Animal Detectives, more people are becoming aware of the terrible suffering inflicted on bears in China. These poor animals are imprisoned in tiny cages and milked everyday for their bile which, the Chinese believe is a "cure all" for various complaints. The bears are unable to move and live in constant misery and pain for years on end. If any of your readers feel moved to do something which may have an influence on the future of these dreadful bears farms please write to China's Ministry of Forestry thanking him for considering your letter and urging him to close down these farms as soon as possible in accordance with his agreement with the International Fund for Animal Welfare.
Write to: Mr Zhen Ren De, Semor Engineer, Ministry of Forestry Protection Dept. Hepingli, Beijing 100714. China.
If you would rather send letters to me I will forward them for you.
Mrs Jill Mills, 13 Stoneycroft Ave, Foxholes, Horwich
