THE leader of Salford Council is demanding a complete review of procedures at Barton Aerodrome following Bank Holiday Monday's fatal air crash.

Councillor Bill Hinds is calling for a full rundown of the details of the crash in which two Turkish journalists were killed.

They died instantly when their two seater plane plunged into a field near the aerodrome minutes after an unauthorised take-off.

It is the second fatal accident at the Eccles airfield in just three months, after two men were killed at a flying display in June.

Salford Council bosses plan to contact the Civil Aviation Authority asking them to consider tightening controls on unauthorised use of airspace around Barton.

Cllr Hinds commented: "I was very concerned to hear about this latest crash and want to be sure everything possible is being done to prevent terrible accidents like this one.

"The safety of local residents and people working and travelling nearby is paramount and I want to be satisfied that those people are being properly protected."

The two men who died on Monday have been named.

The pilot was Ender Erturan, 27. who was married with an eight-month-old baby and his passenger was Yunus Osmanagaoglu, 20, who was a trainee reporter.

The two men had been in the North West to cover Manchester United's game with Blackburn on Sunday for Turkish newspapers.

They worked in the London office of the Turkish daily newspaper The Hurriyet.

Colleagues, deeply shocked by the accident, said that both funerals would take place in Turkey. A Community Autumn Air Fair scheduled to take place at Barton next month has been cancelled.

The Committee and Trustees of Lancashire Aero Club, which operates Barton, made the decision at an emergency meeting last night.

Club chairman Mike Edwards said: "The decision to cancel was arrived at because of the adverse publicity and public concern generated by this tragic co-incidence.

"If we had gone ahead with the event, we felt our neighbouring communities would have regarded us as insensitive to their concerns.

"We are now holding in depth discussions with Salford Council and neighbourhood representatives, which will focus upon future plans to allay public concerns."
