A PREGNANT teenager was carried to safety by firefighters after a firebug set her home ablaze by pushing pieces of burning paper through her letterbox.

Anna Cummings, aged 17, was trapped in a bedroom last night as smoke spread through her home in Barton Road, Farnworth.

A neighbour spotted the smoke and raised the alarm.

Firemen broke into the house and put out the blaze before carrying the terrified teenager to safety.

And today as the girl - who suffered from smoke inhalation - was recovering in hospital, detectives were hunting the arsonist responsible for the attack. Firemen were called to the house shortly after 11pm last night after the neighbour saw the flames and smoke through the front door.

The teenager inside the house was asleep in a chair. She woke as a carpet in the hallway burst into flames and smoke engulfed her home.

The girl shut her bedroom door and waited for the emergency services to arrive.

Firemen today praised her "calm actions" throughout her ordeal.

The blaze which caused minor damage estimated at only £50, was confined to the hallway.

Police want to speak to anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area at the time.
